Matching original skirting boards
Hi
I have a Victorian house (1878) and I have a number of skirting boards that have suffered from woodworm and need replacing with new boards. Can they be matched with the orginal ones, will this be expensive ? The boards are about 9 " deep. I have been on the internet and have not managed to find any one who could match the boards in the Manchester area. Can any recommend a company / joiner who could do this ?
Thanks
Nick

A gentleman operates out of a small nisssen hut, just off Bradshaw Brow in Bolton (Next to the Royal Oak). I don't have his contact details to hand, but I was given his number by a reclaimed timber merchant who I have linked to. I'm sure they would pass on his details.
He matched 9in skirting, along with picture rails and architrave, some were matched from samples and some from profiles which I took from neighbours houses.
I can't recommend him highly enough; quick turn around, and very reasonable prices.
Hope that this is some use.

Re: Matching original skirting boards
Does anyone know of similar person operating in the Newcastle area?
Re: Matching original skirting boards
If you find a sensible, non patronising, sympathetic chap who doesn't cost an arm and a leg and can do doors, windows etc properly in a victorian terrace in the Newcastle area - please, please let me know (privately if you wish)
I've got sick of the "everyone gets it done like that luv"-merchants but will need to contact someone in the next 12 -18months.

Does anyone know of a supplier in the Bristol area as I also have the same issue? Thanks
Re: Matching original skirting boards
It shouldn't be too difficult to get your skirting boards matched, although you need to be prepared for the fact that it will cost considerably more than buying a standard moulding from your local DIY store or builders merchant.
Look in your Yellow Pages for local joinery firms or timber supply specialists. Give them a call and ask if they will run a special moulding for you - give them basic details. They should be able to give you at least a rough estimate of the cost over the phone.
However, for an accurate quote, and in order to get a really good match, it will be best if you can take a sample of the existing skirting to your chosen supplier, so he can copy it exactly.
One final point - the great majority of the cost of the special skirting will be in grinding cutters and setting up the machinery. So while you are having the amount of skirting you need moulded, be absolutely sure that you run enough for any possible future requirement. If you suddenly find in the future that you need some more, you'll have to pay that machine setting charge all over again. So it's worth over-ordering, rather than under-ordering this time.

If you're after a plain 9" ogee skirting board then Kelway stock one but most joiners will make up some - at a cost.
