I have read through many of the old posts on sash windows, but wonder if someone could please take the time to help a complete novice as I really can't work out what I need to be asking joiners I approach.
I have a late Victorian terraced house, which currently has timber casements, approximately 30 years old. The windows are rotten and need replacing and we would like to have new timber sash windows fitted to return the windows to the original style.
I don't understand what I want other than that I definitely want timber. But should that be softwood or hardwood? Should the windows be double glazed to meet Building Control these days (they're currently single glazed)? Should they be painted in a particular type of paint? Judging by neighbouring properties that still have sashes, they would be single paned.
I'd be really grateful if anyone could give me some pointers so I know what to ask joiners I approach and can enter into an intelligent discussion.
Many thanks for your time.
