Our central heating was fitted in 1915. We are getting to the stage now where many of the on/off valves are dribbling up past the shaft that is turned by the wheel. Our plumber is unable to obtain the right type of washer for replacement and is instead packing around the shaft and then tightening the packing down via the retaining nut. This is not a great solution as it renders the wheel very stiff to turn and is not a permanent fix. We enquired of the plumber as to whether replacement valves could be fitted but he advises that the valves that are available are not compatable with the old pipes, which in turn can not be braised to copper as they are cast iron. We are very fond of the old heating system (it is quite eccentric, with pipes up to 2 1/2 inches in diameter) and are loath to accept nothing can be done.
Does anyone know of someone out there who either supplies old style washers, old style valves for direct fitting or who offers a refurbishment service? Suggestions gratefully received!
