This really bugs me! I've lived in a number of Victorian (& thereabouts) houses in my life, and always been frustrated by the lighting in the bedrooms. Almost without fail, there is a single bulb fitting in the ceiling within a couple of feet of the window. What is the point? There is already light coming in from the window, what you need is an alternative source - and IMO it needs to be in the MIDDLE of the room!
So I figure, for such consistency to be evident, there must have been a reason - either originating from the original building of the houses, or from when they were first electrified. And there may even be a reason why we shouldn't move them.
And I also figure - I know who will know the answer to this!
I'm finding it most irritating now, looking at my three (otherwise rather lovely and needing little work) bedrooms, all of which have their lights by the window, so you don't get decent light from them at night!
