I’ve had similar incidents to this and along with other challenges everything is pushing me to add dust extraction to everything I own - was working outside today so didn’t bother, halfway through ripping down an oak worktop really wished I had as I was covered!

Anti-histamine washed down with a good glass of red solves most problems

Obviously this is a joke, read warnings on packets before taking any medication, consult your doctor if worries, the value of your investment can go up as well as down etc etc

Did an archeological survey on Averham church ( it has an organ powered by the nearby Trent ) and saw quite a few mousetraps there, whatever happened to " all creatures that on earth do dwell"?

There were a few baited traps in our house when we moved in fifteen years ago but we brought a couple of cats with us and have never seen a mouse ( not even bits of mouse. ) . But in a CHURCH,?

I've been stripping off woodchip wallpaper in preparation for a plumber booked at the end of May to replace and pipe the radiators. Normally I find concrete walls with gypsum plaster on the ground floor. Here I've found cement painted with gloss paint. Really?

This side of the wall doesn't need to breathe and I don't want to be making a mess in here just yet. It'll be fun to get a skim plaster to stick.

Febond Blue Grit (other primers available) will give you a good key as long as the paint is well stuck to the wall. Also heard of some using SBR or PVA mixed with silver sand as a bonding agent. I've used the Febond stuff myself with a skim of lime on top of plasterboard.

Funny how colours get on your nerves. Mine was 100% magnolia inside and out.

Thanks @paulc - good to know blue grit works with lime. I'm using a renovation lime plaster that will stick to paint and concrete but gloss paint might have been pushing it.

Back to mousetraps - if they are photosensitive like rats are then a simple solution is to light the area you think they’re entering by. I had a problem with rats under the floorboards of my previous house and after trying traps (which worked somewhat) and poison (absolutely pointless) I popped a pen light under the floorboards where I thought they were getting in. Never heard another scratch again!

Being on the edge of countryside we had a minor wood mice infestation one Autumn. We covered one gappy decorative air vent with mesh and replaced a completely broken one. The mice that had made their way up to the attic were caught with live traps. In the quiet of the night it sounded like we had beavers up there! Once captured we released the pretty little things, with their big eyes, back where they had come from; though a bit further from the house, and have had no problems since.

Mice were a bigger problem in our old end of terrace as they would come through from next door where they were tolerated, and those were house mice - yuk!

I encountered a ceiling (in a church vestry) which had cement plaster covered with paper and then gloss paint. It was simply impossible to remove.

Knocking a nearly full glass bottle of soy sauce onto a quarry tile floor while having bare feet isn't fun.

When I came back into the kitchen armed with shoes, mop and old newspaper there were two cats and a fox cub trying to clean up!

It's raining AGAIN so I can't get on with my next sash window, nor do any other job which requires me to work outside (like knock up some lime plaster).

And just to include a second grump on the same post, some little t**t on Saturday night threw a stone at my (new) car and made a mark on a door. I never saw anyone but there was no other traffic and so I reckon they were hiding in some bushes.

The second is a very legitimate grump.

Yup Flyfisher--I have a Land Rover Freelander --R reg the last with a real Land Rover engine-----it is chuntering along in true British style !!!!!!!

Considering the current state of our roads the Land Rover rolling repairs tax (TM) probably works out cheaper than replacing tyres, wheels and suspension on lesser vehicles.
