1920's Chimney re-pointing

Hi , I have recently had chimney repointed on my 1920's Semi-Detatched property.

I had no idea that till now that the original mortar was lime and the roofer who did the work used cement (see attached). Tbh I did not understand much about how lime was used in older properties but starting to learn.

Is this likely to cause long term damage to the bricks - In time I would consider pointing in lime mortar but obviously having just had the work done I would prefer not to have it re-done immediately.The neighbours half is still lime but not in brilliant condition.

What was the cost for getting the chimney re-pointed please (and what did it include - flashing too?)

Yep. It’s done and looks ok. Will last many many years.

I think it was around £400 for the repointing and also the replacement flashing along the top only

Chimneys don't need to breathe so it will be ok

Unless the bricks are softer (more porous) than the mortar, in which case any water within the brick will expand when freezing and may spall the bricks.

I know the mortar needs to be softer but
1. the bricks look new on the picture not original
2. Based on the time of year and above, there won't be alot of moisture and therefore should be fine

Yes, you are right, though your post was a general statement ref all chimneys not needing to breathe and not all chimneys are made out of new bricks. Also bearing in mind, most people wanting advice on this forum generally have older houses with older bricks.
