Remove victorian marblising

I have managed to remove nearly all of the gloss paint on my old fireplace. However I have come to the final layer, which appears to be a marble effect onto slate which refuses to budge. Does anyone know what they would have used to paint this effect. Am trying not to scrape too much as I don't want to paint it again. Help!!!

An obvious question is - why do you want to destroy an original feature?

Hi, if the original paint effect is too far gone (which it probably is). I have done it with paint stripper and very fine wet and dry. Total labour of love, but should look good in the end. Don't forget to seal it afterwards (Tops Tiles or such like sell clear stone sealant).

It was covered in about 10 layers of gloss paint (including the cast iron insert and grate)

A lot of it came off with the other paint layers, but a load still left. Tbh I had no idea it was underneath all that paint! If only some of it hadn't come off, it would have been lovely to keep

Victorian slate fireplace restoration

Hi there, I have a slate dining room fire place which needs some filling for a few scratches near the base and then a good black french polish or similar to bring it all back to life. Does any one have any suggestions, experiences or refrence links to enable me to complete this job? Just for...

I wouldn't advise you to "black french polish it" as a simple sealant is all that is needed. I have successfully done this before.
