We need a grate for our fireplace, which slopes from floor level at the front down to the back and has a sloping groove each side to hold a grate. The old firebrick is engraved with 'National'. Has anyone come across this before ? Would a sloping grate like this work for burning small logs, or would a conventional level grate be better ?

Fireplace floor slopes down from front to back.

Many thanks - we've found a local blacksmith - he's happy to make a sloping or a level grate (the slope from front to back is is quite steep), but although this would be interesting to try out (and to restore the fireplace's original set up) we both think a level grate might be a safer idea for obtaining a good draught for (v.small.logs) ?Best bet is finding a local fabricator / blacksmith (they do still exist if you look hard enough) and getting something made up.
If it slopes backwards it is most likely a grate designed for coal but will still work fine with logs.
