Hi, I have been using the forums to help me resolve our wall issues and would like some advice please.
I have painfully removed layers of old paint/wall paper. I have scrubbed the walls numerous times with super soap including with a wire brush (as this gross gum/slime like stuff kept coming off which I’m assuming was old wall paper glue or tar/chimney fumes residue) along with light sanding and washed it again and again.
I used the Zinsser primer x2 coats on the problem areas (where the yellow keeps coming through) which from what I could extract from this site was the best suitable primer in my budget.
We then white lime washed the walls using a premixed Limewash from Wormerslys. It took 8 coats ( 1 thin coat every 24 hours). To provide a nice white coverage.
We have a dehumidifier set at 50% along with a heater running set at 12 degrees to assist with keeping the wall a regular moisture and temperature to aid it.
We are bested in Dunoon, Argyll (West Coast of Scotland) so very close to the water, along with a lot of heavy rain.
The yellowing is still coming though albeit nowhere near as bad as it was. But obviously on the nice white wall it does not look nice and we use our property to host guests so as you can image it’s not ideal.
Can someone please advise what to do?
Do I treat the areas still showing yellow with more ZINSSER?
Do I keep putting more coats of White Limewash on after treating with more Zinsser?
Or what I am thinking of doing is buying some linseed oil paint (in a nice orange/yellow/brown type colour) and put it over the top of what I have already done?
The wall is in a high traffic location and in hindsight I’m now thinking the lime wash may not be ideal as the wall will need to be periodically wiped down as by the back door with dogs who like to let themselves in after being out in the rain!
I think the wall may have previously been linseed oil painted from the dark green in layers beneath when I was stripping it back to the plaster. See picture which was during the stripping/washing/sanding phase.
I will get a picture of its current state up shortly and eagerly await your advice if you have some, many thanks.
