Age? Render?

Hi,
We are interested in buying this terranced property referred to as an old gentleman's residency but we don't know the age of it. The estate agents don't have a clue. Just that they were build before WW2. If you look at the photo closely you can see cracking above the door and under the left window. Obviously if we decided to buy it we would get a full survey but does anyone know if the lower part that looks like big long bricks is rendered to make it look like that or some sort of cladding. Sorry I don't have a clue what to search for when looking at cost for repairs. Any knowledge and advice greatly appreciated!

There would have been a great deal of activity around Barrow during and after the War years. The town saw huge influxes of people from around the world and many refugees from the bombing around London. Many new homes will have been built to accommodate them and to repair damage from local air raids. Without more detail it's not possible to say if the exterior is a shaped render or panelling added later but judging by the chimney stack it was predominantly brick built but here's the rub. During and after the war new bricks were hard to come by and were often of inferior quality. Whilst this may explain why the house was rendered it could also suggest other problems with the structure. Make sure you get a good local surveyor to look at it before making an offer.

Looking up historical maps, West Mount (which I think this property is) appears on the OS six inch map published in 1873. If I'm right, this house was built well before WWII. A little more digging in local archives could possibly turn up more information. Or you could download the deeds from the Land Registry for £3.

It looks mid 19th Century to me, but that's just the look. The stucco is one of the options for that sort of time frame and I would have thought original.
