Antique lantern

I bought an old lantern at auction but it needs some TLC. It's quite rusty. I have tried lemon juice/bicarb, rust remover spray and a brillo pad which had limited success and removed some of the black colour.
Does anyone know a good way to remove the rust / refurb the black metal frame?
Black satin metal paint maybe?

I dont see a huge amount of rust in the photos, if it is to be used indoors in dry conditions then a decent layer or two of paint would probably be ok but if you wanted all rust off and down to bare metal then you could either use wire wheel in a dremel or submerge it in white vinegar for a week or two which will lift all the rust off, both methods will result in some hours of work. If you wanted a top job then have the delicate bits removed and blast it, although if there are weak areas then this will likely result in holes in the metal. If it was mine I'd wire wheel as best I could, then paint.

Just cleaning off the loose rust and painting will not give you a long term repair. My suggestion is go down to your local auto parts store and purchase a ‘rust converter’ product. After wire brushing down the loose rust and painting! Apply the converter. It will encapsulate any rust and stop it coming back. Usually dries a black colour. After that you can apply you fresh paint knowing the rust won’t come back. Oh, just feather off the remaining paint with some sand paper before applying the converter.

Much depends on how much close scutiny it will get when hung in place. I suspect that will be very little, on which basis I'd give it a basic rub down with a reasonably fine emery cloth or similar to remove all the loose rust and then paint or spray it with Hammerite 'Direct To Rust', available from loads of places online.

Ops I now see I added painting before the rust converter, that out of place. Paint after converting. I certainly hope it isn’t a sign old house dust poisoning
