Need to get up a ladder and sand and oil our oak windows before Winter ( I know it's a bit late ). Think we need to buy a new tool, but not sure what to get. Any recommendations please ?

Why sand them?
Oak naturally acquires texture.
If you sand off the high spots, it will just weather again. And you'll impair that lovely iron grey of aged oak.
As you say, a bit late for oiling unless you have a run of dry days.
Which reminds me I need to creosote our sheds. Bit late for that too.

Good luck buying proper coal tar creosote, Ivor. The Powers-That-Be have designated it as hazardous for public use*. So nowadays you have to buy creosote substitute which, in my limited experience, is not as effective as the old-fashioned stuff. However, if you are a valid tradesperson you can still buy the real thing, so the company Ivor Professional Preservation Corporation might be able to lay their hands on some.
* This is probably true, otherwise why would they have bothered?

I tend to agree with the previous comments about not bothering to sand oak windows - or perhaps a cursory light rubbing down, more to remove and dust and dirt than anything else, for which sandpaper and perhaps a sanding block would almost certainly suffice.
But if it's a new tool you're after (and who can resist such an excuse) and want something really versatile that can handle all manner of jobs including the occasional small sanding tasks then I'd suggest a Fein Multimaster (which I can personally vouch for) or one of the cheaper copies from the likes of Bosch (which I can't personally vouch for).

Fair points. I tend to regard windows as 'small detailed areas' . I entirely agree that a Fein-type tool would not suit large areas such as doors or floors.

A pal of mine has a Fein Multimaster, and I agree that's it's a first-class and highly versatile tool. I have a cheaper Wolf version of the same thing and it's excellent too, although doesn't have the quality 'feel' of the Fein.Flyfisher said:

Bacon sandwiches or suitable vegetarian alternative as fuel.
Detail sanders are virtually useless for this task.
I challenge anyone to a duel! Me with a Bahco 625 or Linbide scraper with fresh blade and anyone else with a Fein or other detail sander. I will have finished the stile before you have finished fixing the backing pad on...
I have four figures worth of electric sanders and sand stuff for a living.
Fein. Agreed. Whilst the old Fein MM250 has plenty of rivals after their patent ran out Fein have recently released the FMM350 which is is a total other league, I use it every other week but mostly for cutting, as a detail sander I prefer using old sanding discs on auto body shop velcro detailing pads.
The problem with all detail sanders is the physics of pressure and heat. As you try and push the sanding pad into the corner you have all 250 or 350 or whatever Watts of energy going through a fraction of a square inch, this heats up the surface clogging the abrasive and melts the backing pad, if you don't know what you are doing you can destroy a pad in a few minutes, you can only really sand aggressively for 10 or 20 seconds before stopping and waiting for things to cool down.
Just in detail sanders I have had 3 x Fein MM250s 1 x Fein MM350, 1 x Metabo DSE280 Intec, 2 x Bosch GDA280, 4 x Metabo SXE400. The SXE400 80mm sander is by far the best, the rest are fairly useless although the Fein does come in handy on a few occasions when my finger tips are raw. Festoo have their Rotex RO90 which is so nearly the first detail sander to actually work but the ergonomics are very poor and it is expensive and has very expensive proprietary abrasives. The Bosch GDA280 has the best detail attachments of any sander but the sanding plate is weak and attaches via a weak plastic and metal spring type arrangement, mine broke and it cannot be repaired, shame as apart from that small catastrophic design fault it was quite a versatile machine.
