best wood for deck?

Hello,

I’m currently selecting materials for a new deck I’m designing and was wondering what the best wood options are in terms of durability, aesthetics, and maintenance. I’ve been leaning towards more sustainable and natural materials.

A friend recommended using charred wood ( one of the examples: https://timbersol.co.uk/product/anthracite-grey-oak-decking/ ) for the decking, which I’m intrigued by, but I’m not sure how it compares to other common options like ipe, teak, or cedar in terms of longevity and care.
If anyone has used charred wood decking or other durable woods for their decks, I’d love to hear about your experiences, as well as any recommendations for other sustainable or high-performing wood options. cheers

No idea about decking but our timber-frame house has exposed oak beams that are rock hard after about 450 years without being charred, so I'd guess it would definitely tick the durability and (no) maintenance boxes plus the aesthetics box if you like its silvery-grey colour.

Not answering your question or helping in any way, but I don't like decking. I can't really think of a single use case where it would be the preferred option. Is there really no other option with landscaping and flagging?

I'm familiar with the 'torching' technique and appreciate the benefits that can be obtained and hence why it is favoured in some parts of the world. However, the very idea of burning, even just the surface, of oak is anathema to me. Indeed, when I finally kick off the family has been firmly told there will be no casket/coffin for yours truly for the journey to and through the crematorium. No more on that maudlin topic here but I do have a question for @LeonUk ; just how long do you expect your proposed deck to last in your garden? I have quite a lot of tanalised pine, fence, gates and posts and raised-bed borders that have now survived for 15 years and look to be capable of at least another 5-10. Please don't waste such fine timbers on a garden ornament..
