Hello All, Seeking advice on potential work I have been considering. I have a three floor victorian house and a back bedroom on the 1st floor has a lean to style roof. The room has a flat lower ceiling (lath and plaster) which covers the higher area of the roof. The room is being redecorted anyway so I removed a section of the ceiling out of curiosity and the area up there is quite decent and would be very handy for storage and future access for cables etc. Aside from the room itself the void also spans part of the hallway and past the bathroom. The ceiling joists are 3 x 2 inches and tied to the wall and a purlin on the other side. Picture attached for reference.
I've contacted a loft boarding company with good reputation who advised they've previously done a large number of victorian properties. I wanted to store relatively light weight but bulky items up there such as Christmas decorations, empty suitcases etc and I wanted to be able to move around it, on occasions, without the ceiling caving in!!
The loft boarding company are proposing new joists to sit on top of the existing ones, but running perpendicular and the job will also add insulation underneath new loft boards. The new joists won't be tied to the wall just the ceiling joists themselves. I questioned if this would be strong enough and was assured it would be.
So my question is will this be sufficient? I'm a little doubtful as at the end of the day all the support / weight bearing is going to be placed on these relatively small (by today's standards) ceiling joists. Curious if others have boarded over such sized ceiling joists and best way forward. Thanks in advance for the guidance.
