Cheer of the Day!

So, I've noticed that as Grump of the Day has had a resurgence in popularity, so there have been more people posting about how their projects are getting them down, might sell up and move etc. It may well be a coincidence but I thought I would propose an injection of positivity to the forum to help keep everyone cheerful!

So rather than posting a grump, post something positive that turned out well, restored your faith in humanity or just plain made you smile.

To kick things off then:


Today a brief burst of sunshine this morning allowed me to get outside and strip some more paint and dress back some more ashlar blockwork. I decided to stop for lunch, and just as I put all the tools undercover, the heavens opened, which has saved me the dirty job of hosing down all the stone dust!

To cap it all off, by the time I had finished my lunch, the sun was out again so I could carry on.

Nice one Twigy ( ). I'm laying some sandstone slabs to make a patio for herself which I'm bedding on sand. The heavy rain overnight has washed the sand (which I had sprinkled over the slabs to dry out to make it easier to sweep in the joints) into said joints and made a better job of it! Like you, the rain has washed off the dust where I had to trim some slabs so, very happy.

I have been removing the devil's own decorating material ( woodchip :roll: ) from between the ceiling beams in the room that will be the kitchen (if we stay, lol!) and for once it has not only come off fairly easily without recourse to a damp sponge etc, but has also revealed very little in the way of cracks*

*although to be fair, I've only tackled a tiny area so far

I've (almost) finished the wood store. It was built this week in the rain as I can't do my rendering in wet weather and I I'm trying to put off insulating the loft. I just need another wet day to fill it with wood (tomorrow is looking good).

I drilled the holes for the shield anchors which will secure the ground fixing of the centre post of my garage door frame.
It absolutely couldn't go wrong or I was sunk, so I've been putting it off for ages.
And it didn't

And out of the blue I found a Friday B&B for the Revival, ten minutes from the circuit and cheap to boot. Unbelievable. So now we don't need to get up at the crack of dawn to drive down on Saturday

I have kitchen worktop in! My sister came down at the weekend and we borrowed a router and a jig. No more newspaper covered ply! I am about to start tiling.

Pictures soon........ it's the last room of the house to be done. Five years of blood, sweat and toil coming to an end soon....

Finished my exhibits for the local flower show on Sunday. They will be in the Hard Handicrafts section. Got some veg to enter as well...

Those exhibits are amazing----I have a dophin just like that in a faux lead finish, love your lion--sorry Zebra--he's mine!!!!!

Why though DJH do you specifically say "Lion with his tail to the left"? Is it that you have also made a lion with his tail to the right? Or could it be that the direction of the tail has some meaning, like statues where the horse has a leg in the air?

Thanks for the kind comments...there is a right tailed lion now Zebra. Can you hear me from over there behind that bush? I won't have time to make the mould for it ready to cast one in bronze for Sunday's show. Here it is with a shellac finish ready to go.





The dolphin is part of a fountain and bird bath but this one Mrs DJH wants as a door porter... unless it sells!!

Whoopee!!!! I won first prize for my eating apples and second prize for my peas and courgette... Mrs DJH won third for her fruit cake...
I'm afraid my entries in the handicraft failed to impress the judges. Off to the grump topic then I suppose. :roll:

For the first time ever, I completed a bit of plumbing work and there wasn't even a single dribble when I turned the water back on.

One and a half bathrooms in and it appears that I am at last getting the hang of it!

Congratulations. Well done. I've been plumbing for nearly 50 years and I can't claim that...

We finished our non-hospital green bedroom revamp in time for my mother - visiting from NZ - to take our old room. We took a bit of a risk with darker coloured skirting, fire and door surround (F&B Lichen), and it seems to have worked.
The French "Gray" on the walls looked far, far too dark before we got it on (against primer), but it's quite pleasant and doesn't shrink the room at all.
And I'm quite happy with the way my radiator spraying turned out too, hooray!
I am refusing to grump about the lining paper lifting at a few edges...(or the pink duvet!)

You know the other day in "Grump of the day" I was complaining that I had tried to do something, it was awful, so I pulled it out again and was going to have to do it all again in a much more complicated way? (Come on, keep up, you lot at the back...)
Well I've decided not to do it at all. Hurrah!
