Today, I was frostily informed by a supplier of building materials, there are only 4 weeks until Christmas, 3 weeks if you only count working days. How could I expect him to produce anything in that time scale. They are busy,busy until at least February........ What do they think we period property owners do over a long holiday like that? I shall be brandishing a paint brush in one hand and a small glass of cooking sherry in the other. The trick is to make sure I have everything I'll need, in place before Britain comes to a grinding halt. We also buy each other lovely presents like curtain interlining and log splitters. BAH HUMBUG.

I've always thought that one advantage of a period property is that serious DIY can be excused during the winter months; lime-based work is on hold until spring, linseed oil paint won't set until springtime anyway, etc, etc.
PS: I'm not interested in reading anything to the contrary - these are my excuses and I'm sticking to them. I really don't want Mrs FF to inadvertently discover that I have no real excuse for hibernating during the cold months. :wink:

Hello joceAndchris, my advice to you is keep up the valuable curtain work and b....r christmas. I have saved a fortune over the years by making my own and by using heavy interlining, cut the heat loss through single glazed sash windows. (thank you listings department!) I ended up running a fledgling curtain business and if I can help you with any advice, I'd be happy to. Why pay exorbitant make up charges when you can buy more expensive fAbrics instead. And as for men hibernating over the winter months, I won't say anything to your wife, Flyfisher,if you don't set a precedent for my husband. Everything already stops for rugby as it is!

I should perhaps add that I'm only hibernating as far as working on the house is concerned, though the thought of a few weeks curled up under an electric blanket does have a certain appeal. :wink:
