I recently removed the brick infill from one of our fireplaces to make it much larger so it will accept a log burner. However, I thought the whole stack would be made of brick, but it turns out it's made of clunch.
My question is: should I line the lower parts with brick to 'finish' it, or lime plaster it? my worry is that the heat will dry it out and its already fairly crumbly stuff to begin with. The upper section of chimney is unlined clunch internally then changes to brick externally.
Any advice would be very useful.
