Condensation test - get it while you can!

With the weather having very suddenly switched from 'kin freezin' to wet and 14 degrees, the ground and the fabric of the building has yet to completely warm up. With the air being so moisture laden, I've noticed condensation in places we never normally get it - on the tiled floor in the unheated entrance porch, for example.

For those suffering with damp and wondering if it's condensation or not, if it looks worse than usual today then chances are it is!

Bizarre difference here, all condensation on the windows and inside the secondary glazing vanished overnight.

This morning it was 7 degrees inside our place and 12 degrees outside. I went out at about half 8 this morning and it was like getting off the plane in Spain. We left the front door open a while. Not long after I noticed water running down the half tiled entrance wall, with the plaster above wet too. The external side of the double glazing had what looked like condensation all over it too. We haven’t got the radiators on yet as the plastering has only just finished. Strange how in December there can be a 17 degree temperature difference from one day to the next.

Yes, it is extreme.

I went out to my garage just now, which is a modern, bone dry building. The metal roll cabinets I keep my tools in were covered in condensation - never seen that before. It was very noticeable last night that it was much colder inside the garage than outside, it all make sense, the warm moisture laden air getting inside the cold garage today.

My workshop floor was soaking wet. Oddly the steel bench was dry. The workshop is ventilated which would explain the moisture ingress, but it seems odd that the floor would have been colder than the bench.

It did rain a lot. Possibly a leak has developed in the roof.

That's soggy! Is it always damp? Makes it is a bit useless for storage, which would be a shame.

Strange how it settles - my motorbike engine is covered in condensation, but only certain bits, the cast aluminium cylinder head covers are bone dry. Parked next to it is an engine crane, made from steel tubing - some bits are wet, some dry.

Asides from the inside of the windows I've never seen condensation in there in the 13 years since I built it.

Normally only gets like that for about a week or so in the spring as the weather warms up before the structure does. Can do it in fluctuating autumn temps especially if I don't keep the ivy clear of the vents, otherwise it's dry.

The variable condensation is caused by the different mass - a heavy chunk of steel has a higher thermal capacity, ie it retains its heat, high or low, for longer. Something in thinner aluminium will adjust faster to changes in temperature.
