Brilliant idea, A reminder to future enterpreneurs ( or Mr Cameron), if they intend to set up a business they must provide housing and leisure activities for the workers with absolutely no intention of going bust and a job for life.
They did tend to be rather dictatorial in what their workers could and could not do though Middi. The living standards in these places was usually way above what the workers would experience elsewhere though, and there were often excellent opportunities for self-improvement - libraries etc - which some workers seized on with great success.
My favourite example of a model village is Saltaire, built by the wonderfully named Titus Salt for his textile mill - although Port Sunlight comes a very close second for me.
absolutely right Feltwell, A working arrangement scenario ideally suited for the tradeunionist.
I must admit it is an excellent idea to " conserve" such places. A very good way for future historians, and for the public at large, to be reminded of a bygone era.
This place in Italy was built on the same idea http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/730. Not easy to find and I don't think the locals really like visitors, but quite beautiful
