Cow dung/manure technique

Does anyone have a link to the 'recipe' for cow manure application to tackle soot tar on a wall? I have the lime plasterer, the dung all good to go, just looking for exact instructions.

Just out of interest, is there any science to this technique? I've certainly read about it being a well-known historic method but I'm wondering if it's the sort of thing that was done because it was the only sort of thing available to people at the time. I'm not suggesting this technique doesn't work (because I simply don't know) but am wondering if there is a modern method that is just as effective?
