Hi everyone, just moved to an early 1900s terraced house. My neighbours have large chimney openings (see photo 2 for a mockup of what they have). Mine has been plasterboarded over at some point and wood has been added to the inside to put the plasterboard on (and I'm hoping it's not to hold bricks up) (see photo 4). I have taken some of the thick plaster off to find where the original arch or lintel is, as there are layers of brick that have been added since. In photo 1 you can see the red bricks at the top which I believe to be the original arch as the bricks are side by side.
My main concern is that the arch bricks and the material between them are very crumbly and I don't know if it's safe to keep opening this up and removing the wood and layers of bricks that have been added.
There is what appears to be a metal bar under the arch bricks (see photo 3, inside the chimney) but I can't see this from the front. Hoping this is supporting the arch?
Any help very much welcomed as insure what to do next or if I should get some sort of expert in.
