Damp staining

I know i am opening a can of worms with this but need to do something about it.

I noticed a damp spot by my front door over the wet winter, been in the house since last summer.

It is one spot at stomach height, its a party wall with no pipes that I am aware of. Gutters are clear.

I need to reseal my window above but there are no signs around the inside of the window suggesting ingress. I did spot a dodgy bit of mortar which I need to repair. See attached.

Water can travel a long way without any internal signs before suddenly popping out somewhere completely unrelated. So possible it is the upstairs window. A weak spot in my windows is where the window case meets the stone cill. Water can get forced under there and then heads downwards with nothing visible in that room.

Also check closely around the door frame, I see there is a PVC infill above the door so that will have been gunked in place with mastic if the fitters were following their standard practice and could be letting water by. Same for any cappings around the windows.

Possible also its a defect in the masonry but that looks pretty sound from your other pictures. Dare I hope its been pointed in lime? There are a few repairs that look like they might be coloured cement. If they are then think about having them re-done with something intended for stone repair so that they don't trap water and damage the surrounding stone.

That bead board paneling looks like it might be made of something synthetic judging by the embossed grain effect. There could be more going on behind it and what you can see is just where the water manages to escape. You may have to do a more invasive investigation to get an idea of the direction the damp is arriving from.

Aye we fell in love with the stone. Always lived in modern builds so adjusting to the amount of care these buildings need! Appreciate the advice
