I have "The Handbook of Painted Decoration" by Yannick Guegan and Roger Le Puil. http://www.amazon.com/Handbook-Painted-Decoration-Step-Step/dp/0393730018 and although I've never done anything, it looks very interesting.

DJH, I'm not quite sure you've got this sorted out. The new rule doesn't require you to specify the species of an animal whenever it is pictured. You can be reasonably confident that most of us will recognise a cat or a dog when we see one.

You simply have to avoid lapsing into the purple vernacular when mentioning your domestic animals. For example, "my cat is sick" is perfectly acceptable, whereas "my fluffy-wuffy chook-chooks have icky tumblies" will attract force 10 opprobrium.
