Does anyone know anything about Edwardian concealed walls. We have discovered that our house has a wall that drops into a deep void in the floor. The wall is in a large entrance hall, designed I assume for creating a larger entertaining area.
We 'dropped' the wall for the first time a few days ago, (probably for the first time in 50 years) and were amazed at the mechanism. It is weighted like a huge sash window. The whole panneled wall, complete with large oak door slid beautifully into the ground.
I have been trying to find out if there are other similar walls, as nobody I have spoken to has heard of this design before. The house is Arts and Crafts and was designed by Walter Sarel in 1906.
Thanks
Sarah
