Hmm. Signs of ‘historical movement’ leading to un-level floors are one thing but geologically unstable ground is quite another.
I’ll be amazed if it reaches £100k.

I suspect it will. It hasn't moved in many years, and the area around it has had a huge amount of money spent on it on stabilisation works. The cottage is very distinctive and well known and is right on the banks of the Severn with lovely views, I can see it becoming a holiday cottage. Mind you you'd never get a mortgage on it, and it's been empty for 15 years and is very clearly damp throughout.

It's amazing that it's survived really. This is Jackfield, on the opposite bank from the cottage, in 1952:-

All those cottages are long gone of course. They found the foundations and old tiled floors when they were doing major ground stabilisation works recently.

Well isn’t that interesting. I guess the stability issue has been solved with the pilings. As grade two listed building with a bit of history, would you be allowed to jack the home level and plumb?

It was the ‘actively moving site’ comment that put me off, plus the bit about falling lumps of sandstone. Still, if there have been stabilisation works then it must be ok. I wonder what sort of warranty those works come with :wink:

I very much doubt it, but I doubt anyone would want to. The internal floors have been levelled to a large degree I believe, the (seriously!) out of plumb walls are the main feature of the house! A bit like the pub below - also not too far away from here - an establishment where being drunk may just make things seem more level for a change....

I live a couple miles from this house. I am not tempted in the slightest to bid on it.
What would bother me is the drainage.
It would need rubber soil pipes and a reinforced concrete septic tank and a self levelling toilet seat.

No, I wouldn't bid on it either, certainly not as a main residence. If someone has pots of money though and wants a very unusual holiday home, I can see it being attractive. Just don't tell them that Woodside is just above them! :lol:

I visit an industrial estate every now and again in Tipton and there is a pub there called The Tilted Barrel. I've never been in but always wonder what it's like inside.

This kind of wonky structure is a real testament to the timber-frame method of construction. A building can move, twist, rack, lean... but it stays standing. A bit of infill repair and it's good for another century or two.

You might like to know that, in Norfolk, our Suffolk term, "on the huh" translates into "slantendicular". Long live regional dialects - as worthy of conservation as historic buildings!

Absolutely. The timber-frame parts of our house are decidedly ‘on the huh’, though not as much as that Lavenham house. I’d guess our house ‘went wonky’ in its first 100 years or so and hasn’t moved for the past few hundred years. Any brick house moving that much would likely have fallen apart.

As for regional dialects, I’ve often heard ‘on the huh’ in these here parts but rarely ‘slantendicular’. Perhaps because we’re only a few miles into Norfolk and the Suffolk influence remains dominant?

About 200 miles off target, I'm afraid Gothichome! Phil Harding's accent is definitely westerly - Wiltshire/Gloucestershire-ish I would say.
