A corner of an architrave caught my eye...the paint was peeling and I thought it odd since it's in a hallway, up high where is should be getting knocked or damaged. Upon closer inspection the wood is crumbly immediately around, with this golden crystal-like material on the surface. Under that there are white stringy looking fibres. Is this dry rot?
It's in a 'press' (shallow cupboard) in the hall in a tenement flat. I converted it to open shelving about 8 years ago and have never had any issues like this. I'm the first floor of four. It's an internal wall, thick as it takes the depth of the press. Backs onto a kitchen wall where the side of the fridge is but no damp issues there. The only thing I can think of is the upstairs flat had a leak a few years ago. I had some staining appear in adjacent rooms, about 5 meters from this, but that leak was all sorted at the time.
Any help or advice of what I need to do would be much appreciated, I'm a bit worried to say the least!
