Yes, lovely, and yes, French - the open shade gallery, the handkerchief shade.
I too, have not seen another one like it. At £80, a snip.
Fortunately, as I am busy trying to unlaod light fittings... commercial break....

Do you think the shade could be Fenton Silver Crest? It has no makers mark on it but it does strongly resemble Fenton Silver Crest. There is no sticker however the glass does have the inconsistencies one would expect from early glass.

I've really no idea, always thought handkerchief shapes were 50s but prepared to be proved wrong. However old it is, a lovely thing and I also think a real bargain at £80.

It's not right for BC though, I'm going to be looking for 18th C styled wall lights in the future and am currently hoping to win this auction for the porch pair of dangling bulbs.

Did you win?

The shade could well be 40/50's , I read that Fenton Silver Crest was produced from 50's? to the 70's however later pieces had a makers mark on them and the aerly ones had stickers. The shade could also be a later addition.
Although this style of shade might be a lot older , there are many Victorian ruffled shades like this around but I have yet to see one as flat.

Apparently this one is from the 30's and is French , it is similar to mine but not quite.

Still , if I were to keep it I would probably put a nice cranberry or vaseline shade on there, the shade it sports at the moment is a little too twee for my tastes, but then again I am a bloke.

Yes I won it! £36 for 2 shades, very pleased but we'll see if they really are crystal, and vintage, when they arrive, or plastic and made last week in China!

I think the shade is delicate and original and not twee at all, but cranberry or Vaseline would also look good. It does look very like that 30s one.

Joce they look lovely, it looks as though they mount by passing the cable through them so you may have to take apart the light fittings you wish to mount them on, not a difficult thing to do. Also I see they are using one of those big old type bulbs, I think a clear incandescent on a dimmer would give the same warm glow effect but I am sure you can buy bulbs specifically for this purpose. They seem to be proportioned just right as well , not too small but not overwhelmingly large either.
Do you know how to tell real crystal? I wouldnt have the foggiest.

Excellent news that you won those. I saw the auction was ended so hoped you had been successful. They certainly look vintage rather than "China made yesterday plastic". I assumed that they just needed one of the fittings that unscrewed for a normal shade which would be very easy to deal with. Can't wait for some pictures of them in their new home.

Very kind of you both. Yes, bit of fiddling about to assemble but not too taxing I'm sure. The fiddliest bit is that in time-honoured style of one job leading to another the current set-up in the porch is that one bulb is rigged to provide exterior lighting - can you see the lead feeding into the letter box? And then outside we have twinkle lights in the trees running from that, which are some defence against the pitch blackness of Halls Hill.

Proper exterior lighting is a whole big job in itself which will necessitate a trench cutting under the path and around the garden, with sockets on posts I suppose. It's something we've always dreamed of doing, but I suppose it will be expensive, so for now I think we're going to have to make do with uncoupling this rather unorthodox power supply and having an electrician come and cut through to make a proper spur for the nearest twinkle lights.

And Rob, I'm quite sure you could tell crystal from glass if you saw the two side by side! Nice crystal light fittings send dancing spots round the room.
