Hello all,
We're tackling the next room which had blocked up fireplace with an obviously stuck on mantelpiece. This weekend I pulled off the plasterboard blocking the fireplace to see what was there. The aperture had been reduced - and painted black - probably to take a C19 metal fireplace. But intriguingly there was a herringbone pattern to the brickwork at the back. I followed the herringbone back behind the C19 brickwork and found what appears to be painted plaster. This fireplace is in the central chimney stack and on the first floor. This part of the house is probably C17. Given the painted plasterwork appears to relate to the herringbone brickwork it probably contemporary with it and is definitely aligned within the original fireplace aperture. Anybody come across anything like this before?
