Located in our bedroom. Does anyone know why our fireplace hole is asymmetric? it is the original 1906 tiles set into the floorboards, but as you can hopefully see in the photo the tiles are wider on the right hand side because of the curved design on that side of the 'hole'.
Two reasons. The wall housing the fireplace runs at a slight angle to the line used when the floorboards were laid - its a reasonable assumption that the opposite wall to that shown will have been the start-point when the boards were laid. The second reason is that whoever laid the tiles decided that take the baseline reference from the floorboards rather than the wall.
Not really sure what ‘wider’ means in respect of the tiles. Doesn’t look out of place from the one shot though…
The fireplace and wall have obviously been meddled with a bit, so it’s anyone’s guess as to what the curve a corner relate to and why! Either way, this would have all been hidden with a grate and surround…
