I was hoping someone on the forum could help. Ive recently bought a 1918 period house which has 2 fires downstairs and 2 up. I have removed some old boards which were present over the original fireplace upstairs in one of the rooms. Behind them you can see the brick structure (rectangle) with the top bricks forming a small arch. We cleaned it out and you and see a small iron grate near the bottom of the fire about 1-2 inches of the floor bricked into the structure. Right, here goes, the problem is the fire place has what looks like rubble cemented into part of the hole and i would like place a nice cast iron fire into the opening. Is the rubble like structure part of the fireplace and chiminey or can this be removed to form a nice square opening and then space for the cast iron fire and surround??? hope this is as clear as mud (lol) please help. Thanks in advance. ps. if you need a pic i could get one taken to help.
