Hi all. I'm repointing my very poorly maintained 1890s terrace with nhl 3.5 on the chimneys and upper brick courses, and nhl 2 lower down where it is protected. This was recommended by Cornish Lime due to the previous owner using cement mortar and poorly maintaining the roof and guttering and there being a lot of damaged bricks. I am about to flaunch a chimney. I have 4 metal chimney pots/ gas cowls to vent each chimney. I chose these as I am small and the house is cheap and I want ventilation and this is my compromise. None of the chimneys will be used again. We also dropped the height to take out many courses of damaged bricks but retained the engineering bricks for the cap.
My question is: when flaunching on top of engineering bricks and to hold the metal vents/ pots/ whatever should I use something like sbr on the pots as a bonding agent as they are non porous? Also 3.5 is weak for a chimney flaunch but it isn't overly exposed or by the sea, for example... is there anything I should do to strengthen the mix and make it slightly more waterproof?
