Flue by a window...

Hello,

I have been googling and googling: What is the minimum distance required between an external flue and the nearest window. I am getting a new condensing boiler, and will be making a small hole for the little flue to stick out. My gas safe plumber will surely know the answer , but as always, I want to do my own research before hand. Anyone either know the rule or point me in the right direction?

Try this. I think that distance from openings is in the installation instructions for the boiler too. In my boiler instructions it say 300mm from a window for horizontal flues, and 600 if vertical ( i think).

In our previous house we had an oil-fired range installed, with a power flue mounted on an outside wall. The installer insisted that the power flue should be at least 1 metre from the nearest window.

However, I suggest that you also have to take other factors into account: the prevailing wind, whether the nearest window is level with or (worse) above the flue outlet... that sort of thing. I reckon that regulations have to be supplemented by common sense.

I looked at our Firebird C26 manual last night and it said that OFTEC recommends a minimum of 1m from any opening. Our set up was very awkward due to the flue exiting in a confined area with the thatch overhang. On a windy day we sometimes have a problem whereby the exhaust is blown back on itself and into the intake. Not ideal but to add another joint in the flue to take the pipe above the overhang leaves us close to our maximum flue length (all joints/bends considered).

Details of where the flue can be placed will be in the installation booklet that comes with the boiler.

The horizontal distance will probably be 600mm for a balance flue natural draught or 300mm fanned draught... that is for any boiler over 14kW output.
The vertical distance above an opening 300mm for both types of draught up to 32kW. Above that output the distance increases to 600mm.
Below an opening the vertical distance is between 600 and 2000mm depending on output.

The measurement is taken from the actual opening part of the window/door, not the edge of the window or door where it meets the wall.
If the window does not open it is not classed as an opening obviously.

I would take the minimum distance as just that ,a safe minimum distance.
In other words get the thing as far away as you can , not as close as you can.

The minimum safe distance is a distance derived from the understanding that the installation is set out under ideal conditions with a well maintained boiler and flue, these ideal conditions very rarely show them selves in the real world.
