At 120' high It is an interesting folly. I have been asked to quote on a new roof recently, It will be an interesting cantilever scaffold from the balconies with sheet zinc, lead or copper to follow. A good challenge.

Yes it did have work to the roof, not an entire new roof, not sure about the details but think it was probably done to a low budget with a certain amount of false economy.

Aha - if we're getting into pedantry territory, then I shall feel right at home! :wink:

I think you'll find that 'duomo' is the Italian word for a cathedral - not just a dome. ('cattedrale' is also used).

But perhaps we need an arbitor - let's hope that Middi pops in on this thread.

"Dom" is German for "cathedral" too. Just thought you'd like to throw that into the mix.

I thought "cathedral" came from the latin cathedra which tranlsates as "throne" - ie the throne that the archbishop sits in.

Don't know if "Duomo" is another translation for throne. Suspect it is more related architecturally to dome, rather than throne.

So Duomo has nothing to do with dome, and everything to do with domus...

Since many Duomos do not have domes (Asti, Bari & Bitonto all appear to be dome-less) it cannot be argued that "Duomo could be applied to either the building as a whole or just to the dome because always accompanies the other"

In which case true pedantry would demand that both Duomo & Basilica are equally wrong if the dome was all that was required.

Surely with this in mind Duomo fits for the building without a dome and also with a dome, or even just a dome by itself it must be the correct use of the word in all three scenarios and therefore the most used and appropriate..... :wink:
