Hi all,
I am trying to bring my Victorian pine hallway floor back to life and I'm trying to work out if I need to start again. Here is the process I went through:
- Punched hundreds of nails down
- Sanded by hand with a Makita orbital sander starting with a 40 grit, did the edges with a scraper
- Sanded 80 grit then filled all the holes with Lecol 7500 mixed with the 80 grit dust
- Sanded 120 grit and cleaned thoroughly
- Applied two coats of Osmo Poly oil (12 hours between each coat)
It has been curing for 5 days now and I am disappointed with how it looks. From some angles with certain lighting it looks great but obviously I am aiming more consistency. The finish is patchy in places and looks unfinished.
What could I have done wrong? One theory I have had is after applying the filler I should have done an 80 grit pass before moving up to 120. Some of the patches are in areas where Ive used filler (third picture). I used a pencil to draw a long S on each board before sanding to ensure level sanding. I applied the oil thinly and wiped off any excess I saw instantly.
I'm thinking of starting again but on one floorboard from 80 grit. If that turns out well I will crack on with the rest. Any thoughts or advice appreciated
