How much oil does an Aga/Rayburn use per week on tickover?

That's interesting Jocelyn. Am I right in thinking this could be because Agas have much more internal insulation than Rayburns and, presumably, they don't provide much 'background' heat?

Yes, I watched my 4 oven aga being built--- big bags of vermucilite (sorry sp?) were carefully layered around the ovens, this not only keeps the background heat down, but each section of the oven/s has a different thickness, hence the accurate temperature on the racks inside for perfect cooking results.

I am currently using a cat enabled esse which is not insulated and 'oh boy' does the top and sides get hot when up to cooking temperatures, you cannot touch the top at all, whereas you can on the aga. The only way I can keep the running cost of this appliance down, is to turn the gas flame to idle when I have finished cooking. That gives me a gentle warmth but takes 25 minutes to heat up, then if you cook anything on top the oven temp goes down. GIVE ME BACK MY AGA!
I reckon a gas aga is the cheapest to run at the moment---a proper heatstore not one of these new fangled glorified things that you can switch on from your mobile.

Thanks for that information Jocelyn. One other question though - what is a "cat enabled esse"? I know Esse make range cookers, it's the 'cat enabled' bit that intrigues me.

mmmmm, be warned after reading that and ask yourself why I want my Aga back!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately getting agatha into this kitchen was well nigh impossible, hence the compromise.

certainly a challenge wording my reply carefully, don't want to be caught slagging any one product over the virtues of another :wink: :wink:
