Even those prototype ones look amazing. I love shutters, wonderful for privacy and keeping the warmth in. We are lucky that the house still had all its originals. The lower level ones have a big bar that swings up to lock them in place, I assume to keep out the ne'er do wells and local ruffians.

I've thought that Lady A, shutters would work really well where we are (facing the north sea :shock: ) I'm sure Andy wont mind a little more woodwork (it'll only take two minutes / look lovely when it's done etc.) So shutters for us then, sorry Joceandchris. (no English heritage curtains downstairs). At least it should stop the greasy nose prints :lol:

Closed shutters are the perfect way to convey the message "nothing to see here". Fully open shutters will attract the pathologically curious, but for maximum greasy nose prints you want to leave them partially open, that hint of something interesting will be irresistable :lol:

Lovely work. Will they be painted? Shutters ought to be. There also should be little tiny brass knobs window side, and big iron bars room side.

Long shutters get divided into multiple panels, shorter windows two panels. This pic just about shows that the Georgians thought there ought to be a tiny middle panel in a long stretch of shutter, which is a scaled down version of what you see in country houses where the panels are much much larger

Oh,I admire carpentry so much, one day I might take it up as it doesn't seem all that different to constructing in fabric. I'm lucky in my dear old dad though, a real craftsman and meticulous carpenter. He found some rotting decaying bits of old shutter in the shed, realised they came from our bedroom, and brought them back to life.

Curtains go over shutters, no reason why agbagb shouldn't have both for maximum warmth and privacy. The two pics below show how stark just shutters can be, and how curtains define a room. The two courses I did at Merrick and Day for hand sewn interlined curtains and swags and tails were wonderful, if anyone else baulks at the price of professional work and has hand skills and interest I heartily recommend.

Worms, there is glue involved. Not sure if they are tenoned too - I'm definitely no chippy - so here's a photo of the bits...

And a close up of a joint.....

The second set on this window worked better, and it was made a lot easier using piano hinges.
Slowly getting the hang of the router table, it is a scary bit of kit :shock:
I think the next thing to invest in is a decent mitre saw, but without the sliding rails - the one I have wanders after a few cuts which is pretty frustrating.

Last photo is the finished prototype window. The wife splashed a little dye on the end panel to see what it would look like.

Learnt plenty from this exercise though, and the first lesson was to get both side batons/hangers absolutely level front and side before doing 'owt else - rookie error I'm sure but there we go

The best news is the temperature difference. We put a thermometer behind and in front of the shutters and over the course of the weekend saw temperature differences between 5 and 7 degrees C Fantastic!

I love this thread, except that it makes me realise how slowly our project is progressing Still, it's very inspiring all the same and the shutters look amazing!
Can I ask if you've thought how to recess the shutters into the wall? I also love shutters but I think we'd need them recessed as our window sills are deep (about 12-18ins) and windows narrow meaning we'd get even less light into the room. Any else one had to do this kind of thing?

We are just going to have to work with what we've got, so if there is room in the existing windows the shutters can sit in the rebate, and if not they will just fold against the wall. The wife is happy with this and at the end of the day that counts for an awful lot :lol:

Just getting everything square is an art in itself.
An excellent end product for "an exercise".
For what it's worth I'd use more than two hinges to hang each shutter and I'd like them painted myself.
If someone is of the artistic bent a picture/pictures painted on the shutters can look very good too.

Your house looks really good.
You even have a similar bedroom chair to what I have. (I dare not sit on it)
The only things that jar, and that is because everything else is so good, are the modern radiators.

For the record i like swags....couldn't eat a whole one though
Blokey bit follows. It's a hobby level Trend table mounted solidly to a bench. This came with a Makita 3612 1/2 router from good old flea bay (and it came with a handful of bits to have a go with) After some reading and chats with the fella at the local tool shop I gritted my teeth and ordered a Trend PSC easy set scribe set. This did cost a few sheckles but i have to say if you are careful setting the heights it's flipping easy to get good results with. Also bought an extended collet as changing the bits was becoming a pain. All in all it's cost about £250 which as I've said was much less than a windows worth of bought in shutters.
And no, never really done any woodwork before, which no doubt a lot of you will be able to tell...but we love a challenge or we wouldn't have bought this house in the first place :lol:

My table is home made from an old kitchen worktop and a £5-in-B&Q-because-it-was-too-knackered-to-sell workmate! Its not an ideal set-up and will be changed when Tescos run out of kit-kats.

That's very interesting - Mrs Geeza has a yearning for window shutters, but I'd always assumed if they ever got near the top of the to-do list that the machinery to make them would cost rather more than you've laid out (I was thinking "spindle moulder"). So maybe we can transfer window shutters from pipe dream to possibility....

I've got a mitre saw without sliding rails, and often regret not having splashed the extra cash to get one with rails, as it would have been considerably more useful. I think you have to spend quite a lot to get one which is sufficiently well built to be accurate though!
