Anybody ever seen a church with a dormer window like this before? Note the round tower, too. Not unusual in East Anglia, but definitely so in less fortunate parts of the country ( :wink: ).

The thatched church is St Agnes, Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight. It was built in 1908.

How interesting! I had never noticed another church with that feature, but maybe I'm just unobservant.

The one on St John, Timberhill, in Norwich looks to be in almost exactly the same location on the building as Holy Trinity, Bungay. I wonder what their function is/was? Light for the organ loft, perhaps? That's pure speculation - I haven't been inside Holy Trinity yet, a church not being my natural environment.

But I shall pop in next time I'm passing.

At St John, Timberhill the organ is at the diagonally-opposite corner of the building, above the vestry. I suspect the reason for the dormer is one part extra light where there isn't a south window because the porch is in the way, and about eight parts Victorian prettiness.

But despite the absence of a south window at that point, there are two dirty great windows in the west gable end. So maybe it's just the full nine parts dinkiness.

But why only nine parts, and not ten? Is it anything to do with the same principle as Spinal Tap's amplifier?

There was a tower blocking out light from the west, but that had gone before the dormer was put in, so maybe it is 9 parts dinkiness. I'll be seeing the sacristan for a pint tomorrow so I'l ask him.

Apparently if you put Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon on the radiogram, and start watching The Wizard of Oz at the same time with the sound turned down, there are various points at which the music is unusually well-suited to the action on screen.

Pink Floyd's 'Echoes' is supposedly a good alternative sound track for the stargate sequence in 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Watching paint dry can be significantly enlivened by matching it with some favourite music, so there's no real excuse to get bored. :wink:
