Any recommendations for a particular type of putty? I want it for filling small gaps / cracks on linseed oil-painted windows. I can get 2kg from toolstation for less than a fiver or pay four times that or more from other specialist suppliers.
I never found any great difference. As far as I'm aware it's just fine ground chalk and linseed oil, so I don't see how the cheap stuff could be made any cheaper.
I had wondered the same thing - people put all sorts of stuff into things to make it 'better' these days. I was using linseed putty from Wickes and it tends to be a bit fluid at the top and hard at the bottom but otherwise it appears to be linseed putty.
I think that's just when it's been sat on the shelf for a while Malcolm, a bit of kneading brings it back. It must sell in tiny volumes compared to years gone by. I can remember my Dad buying it from the glazing merchants, they just scooped handfuls out of a big drum and wrapped it in greaseproof paper. Once home he used to have to roll it in newspaper to soak up the excess oil before use.
