Lintel crack

Hi All,

I need to fill the cracks in a lintel above my fireplace, which I have stripped of layers of gunk to reveal the sandstone and want to keep it revealed (will be plastering over the concrete lintel installed for support!). I am thinking of making some filler with the dust I have kept from sanding the sandstone lintel and mixing it with a clear resin perhaps; would this work? And what sort of resin should I use?

Mixing the dust with a bit of NHL or lime putty and using that as a filler will do the job fine.

Resin will distort the colour and it will end up being darker. I spent a long time chiselling out someone’s similar attempts at my previous place and re-doing it as I described above for that very reason

Lime putty, just a thought off the cuff, would mixing the sanding dust with ordinary glazing putty be much easier. Just a thought.

Would mixing the dust with linseed oil putty (glazing putty) work the same as lime putty do you think? Thanks

Wouldn’t have thought so as I’d suspect the linseed oil in the putty will darken it but only one way to find it!

You can also purchase something like this if you don’t want to buy a load of line just for a repair. Various stone types are available

I did consider the linseed but my thoughts were it may absorb into the sandstone not darkening it but maybe showing a slight change in the hue of the sandstone. It was just a thought off the cuff, lime too would cause a surface stain I think.

Shouldn’t get any staining from lime. Sadly I don’t seem to have any photos of my previous repair efforts, but once it had been done and brushed back it was nigh on invisible
