Finally - we exchanged contracts on our new purchase a "period" 1960's bungalow. We complete on monday. We have also received an offer on our Grade II listed cottage. Really excited at the challenge of looking at things in a whole new light. Penners - I have been avidly watching Only Fools and Horses for decorating ideas!!

Thanks for the good wishes. My chickens will hopefully get more land to play in (and hopefully some sisters!) if I can persuade the hubby. I keep telling him that now we have all the land and outbuildings we could let our beloved Border Terrier have some puppies too but so far he hasnt been convinced. After years of thinking in decor terms of rich golds, reds and greens (our Edwardian house) and chalky creams and whites with chintzy wallpapers (our cottage) I feel myself strangely drawn to all things Ercol and pale greys with a hint of orange or lime!! Think I needs to lie down! It will certainly be a change for us but I am determined to embrace it and see where it takes us.

It has set me thinking... what constitutes a "period" property from the perspective of 2012?
Is it a rolling 50 year age. 100 years? Is it something that is pre-war? (which war?!) Is it something that forms part of the most recent significant architectural mode that is no longer modern - eg 1970s currently? Is it at least a generation (or two?) old?
Is it something else, maybe personally defined? Does it really matter?

Thanks Familywiggs. I know what you mean about the "period property" bit. One thing I would say - that is it doesn't matter how old or young the property - the people who live in them are sometimes dirty blighters. We took possession of our new place on monday - finally at 3.45 and the state of that womans kitchen cupboards left a lot to be desired! I think I should be entitled to shares in kitchen cleaners and disinfectant!! When we moved into our Grade II cottage a couple of years ago I thought that was bad enough but I was wrong. I keep telling myself it will all be worth it in the end. I have to admit it feels strange though to have walls that are straight!
