Outside light

Hi All,

I've been searching unsuccessfully for an outside light that we like for a while, so I opted to make one:



It's twin bulb, one large round led faux filament that looks nice but not much light output and then a GU spotlight for the door.

All connected via a PIR movement sensor with light and duration control.

You can buy the scrolls online so not that hard.

Mostly, yes. I've made a couple on similar lines, using old scrollwork from rusted gates or railings.

I think your main bracket though looks out of proportion, over-engineered and rather clumsy compared with the delicate scroll.
A small detail - I think the bracket should be about 2" higher. It looks aesthetically wrong coinciding with the lower edge of the lintel. It also spoils the outline of the keystone.

That's a good idea. I can never find the keyway on my black door handle in the dark but do have a handy 1m long sign hanger a few feet above the front door. Hadn't thought about mounting a light on there.

:lol: Outside off my remit, proportions and location were dealt with by the artistic director (via a wooden mock up).

It is deliberately longer than may be the norm to help (along with the vines) to add dimension to the overall elevation which is very flat.

Very good! Did you make the lantern as well?

I quite enjoy it when I get an excuse to get the welder out, even though my welding has usually come back up to scratch at just the point at which I finish the job!

Depends on the layout of course, but one thing I've found works really well with lights for a doorway is to use 2 PIR's back to back - one scans the doorway for people coming out, one scans the approach for people coming in, either can trigger the light. Steinel PIRs are expensive but last well I've found, a tip an electrician friend gave me.

Yes, I made the lantern as well, it was the hardest part getting all the 3D angles "correct". They didn't ended perfect but its amazing what a welder and grinder will fix :lol:



Next time I would probably make a wooden pattern to build the lantern off.

Two PIR's is a good I idea, no need on this one (PIR is pointed "down" a lot) but I might do that for the back garden around a corner.

I struggled to source the glass in my area, "national shortage" apparently. However, I discovered Pearson glass who do online orders, they also appear to have a range of restoration / historic glass.

That's useful, thanks - shame their restoration glass sheet sizes are a bit small for some of my windows. They're not an impossible distance from me either.

It's nice to do something like your lamp, it'll give you satisfaction every time you look up as you come home. I've got a nice over-door light to fit here, alas it's been sat in the garage for far too long as I keep thinking I should complete every other job on that side of the house first before I fit it, save the risk of damaging it! Hopefully next summer I will finish the jobs on that side and the scaffold tower will not need to go there again for a good while.

I've got a nice old GEC corner lamp hanging over my driveway - old thread here https://periodproperty.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13502&hilit=corner+light&start=15. I put a plastic bowl on it instead of the glass one when all the building work was going on. I had a skip delivered further up the drive a couple of weeks ago, skip wagon turned up to deliver it and reversed up the drive *way* quicker than I would even do in the car - must have missed it by only inches - "Oh yeah I saw that mate" - like hell he did!
