Painting floorboards

Hello. We have modern floorboards in our little bedroom which have never been painted. A few years ago I stained them with Osmo (?) but while it has lasted really well it's too orange. We now want to paint them. Does anyone know if F&B floor paint would cover and stick on stained boards? Thks. V

I am currently doing exactly the same thing, I have presumed that the paint will not stick (I'm sure I read it on the tin or in the technical info on the F&B website) but also as the surface finish on boards with the Polyx Oil is slightly glossy so the paint will have nothing to key to. I have sanded the boards back to the wood and painted over that and am quite pleased with the results.

When I first started painting the floor in another room (from bare boards) I initially used a generic wood primer before the F&B Primer for a small area and I have found that the paint scratches very easily leaving what I believe is the generic primer exposed for the bit of floor treated in this way.

Isn't Osmo just polyurethane? A light sand to key would make it stick I'd have thought. Why F and B, is it really good paint?? I got suckered into using Little Green as the colours are really nice, but it didn't last outside, although I'd use it inside. Floor paint needs to be super durable, are there not cheaper and better alternatives to Farrow and Ball??

Thank you, Andrew. Plasticpigeon, I too got suckered into using Little Greene for the external paintwork. It fell off within months, and our decorator has just finished re-painting in Weathershield Satin (and I can't tell the difference). No historic woodwork though so not bothered about using modern paint.
I didn't know if anyone else made floor paint hence the F&B. I used it for the main bedroom 7 years ago and it's done well. I quite like it where it's rubbed off a bit in places. Any other floor paint recommendations?

Hi Vicky! I like FnB floor paint and it's going strong in our bathroom after 6 years. I like their exterior paint too, and Little Greene's, and have had no problems with either - but this is a dry old part of the Uk, and we are effectively in a wood. I plan to rub wax over my LG paint on the windows at the front, when all is finished. I reckon if I do that every 6 months the paint will certainly last 5 yrs.

It's true, I'm going to be up a ladder for at least 6 months now if not 1 year. All the exterior cornice needs doing and the windows all need a third coat of LG. Then, we're booking Skils back again to replaster the undercroft, which means a lot more stripping and painting for me. Just as well I love it!
