Period property holidays

With Summer hols underway for many, we've just arranged an interesting holiday in a period Spanish-style property in California. We used 'Home Exchange' (google it) which enables people to swap homes with others around the world for 'free' holidays.

There is a lot of demand (especially from Americans) for an exchange in period UK properties and if you are prepared to search around, you can find some lovely period properties to swap with.

I'm not connected with the site in any way, but thought that some here might benefit from a holiday and this seems a great way to do it.

I've heard about this sort of thing and it has certainly intrigued me. It'll be interesting to hear how it all works out.

I love that idea, and am in hopes one day of doing it, when we sort out our clutter! It also works very well in this country apparently, so exchanging Bath for Edinburgh, for example.

We have already agreed to an exchange for a long weekend with a family in Cornwall.

Have been swamped with requests to stay at ours....now trying to find the place we want to stay at

You will struggle to find anything as good as yours though I bet.

What will you do with all your personal effects, pack them away?


I could never ever get the house clean and tidy enough to do it

No...you let people use them. We're even swapping cars with our US exchange couple. The idea is that they bring clothes & purchase food (but to be honest our veg garden will provide plentiful supplies), but everything else is simply borrowed (saves on duplicate purchases)

Now, I wonder if this idea could be extended - you swap period homes and expertise to get some outstanding jobs done? Who knows you might even be able to swap with someone who'll fix your solar panel to the roof!

Ok, 3 bed cottage near Stratford on Avon, needs complete replacement windows, in wood, all handmade. Biff - I could do wonders weeding your garden and sorting your linen cupboard, and I promise I'll cycle all the way there.......

I'm not quite as concerned about 'privacy' as some....but I have an office annexe at home which will remain locked and unaccessible to the exchangers. I'll confine them to the East Wing :wink:

Now there's an idea....if anyone wants to come and stay for a while and promises to finish a few jobs, I'll happily deploy my skills at your place (although you might regret it)

I love the idea of an overseas guest living here for a bit and me teaching them English -but would they really want to live in building site conditions, bathe infrequently in yellow rainwater, have no TV, and help out with paint stripping? I think they'd run away after half a day!

The idea Joce is that you are having a holiday in their house, not B&Bing them and making them work for the board
