I am sure they would want to give you some money for the slates and then sell them for many fold to someone who desperately needs them.

They look very good and well worth keeping on the roof, if you did ever re-roof you could do away with the hip tiles by using close mitres on the hips with lead soakers underneath which will improve the looks very much as long as it is done well.

You can test them by picking them up and tapping them, if a dull thud is emitted not so good but a nice ring means its good and solid and not delaminating.

Yes tend to look better as a skinny bit rather than with bulky incorrectly angled hip tiles. Where the external angles meet, internal ones are valleys.

Wife works in the treatment centre, specialises in new hips too, can be arranged, one at a time though!!

I'm delighted and honoured to learn this stuff from such kind people- I always dismissed the nitty gritty of building as being a terrible bore; now realising how constrictive and damaging this attitude is.

Quite right too, however standard new buildings are not terribly interesting although older houses and certain new homes can be very interesting.

Maybe they would accept them? I still have reservations about radio technology in houses with thick walls, I have been lucky as we had everything apart running some FP20 fire cable was not an arduous task.

You are still reliant on batteries, I guess if you can trust yourself to be thorough it would not be an issue.

I've fitted exactly the smoke detectors that Penners posted up. The clever thing is that they relay - so if one goes off it doesn't have to transmit to all the others, just the nearest one, which then passes the message on. They work fine in my house.

I did have some Screwfix ones before (no longer sold) where the radio-interlink didn't work very well. In my case the furthest units apart are from the end of a single-storey old scullery that sticks out of the back of the house, up to the 3rd floor of the main part of the house.

If you have everything apart for renovation works then definitely that is the time to put a hard-wired system in. Mains powered alarms that are interlinkable by cable can be very cheap, my firm brings some in from China for about £3 each. It's much more if you want a professional system complete with control panel of course.

The radio-interlink ones aren't cheap but in my case the disruption caused by putting the nescessary wiring in for a hard-wired system would have been too much. I did baulk slightly at spending nearly £200 on a system when you can buy stand-alone battery powered units for a few pounds each, but then I put it in context - it's for my family's safety. If a fire started in our utility room we wouldn't hear the detector going off if we were asleep, without the radio-interlink setting off the one outside our bedrooms. Having worked with someone whose house burnt down as a result of a faulty fridge-freezer, I'd rather play safe!

One of the nice things about this forum - you seem to get lots of different buildings involved, from the humble but much-loved two-up two down Victorian terrace to the decidely more grand & much older (have you seen the Grand Designs where a couple restore a ruined castle?? Fantastic). And of course with those different buildings come people with widely different backgrounds.

Well the panel and detector price with the cable came in at below what a couple of dozen of these radio interlinked ones would have been. But I can see the attraction of these, they do fit with minimum intervention with the historic fabric. I just dont like battery devices if there is another option.

Oh that's just lovely. Those great big imposing chimneys are fab, and the poky-out attic windows, and the green is great! I have a very soft spot for the Victorians, they had such grandeur and pride...I bet it's all high ceilings and fancy plaster. How lucky the house is to have you: when I think of my little Viccy converted flat in London I could just weep -everything of interest ripped out in the 80's.

I agree entirely - and confess that it was more to do with the thought of all the disruption and re-decoration than with historic fabric that made me go for battery power! Also I know I could fit battery ones quickly and would therefore actually get around to doing it!

They do also do mains-powered radio-interlinked ones, if it's the running cables between detectors that's the problem.

Thank you! I confess the green is going (slowly), that's why the roofline woodwork is a cream colour. It's typically ostentatious Victorian middle class inside - it starts off "posh" near the front door and gets more plain the further you go inside. Pretty much everything - door locks, doors, architraves, skirting, cornice etc - gets plainer and therefore cheaper the further you go away from the hallway and front room. We're lucky it's not been messed about with too much, it was a brewery house and was lived in by tenants from when it was built up to 1988. Also means it didn't get much maintenance though.

I think the original builder had delusions of grandeur and was trying to keep up with the place below, which it over-looked the grounds of originally (before someone built a housing estate in the 1930's.... :roll: ). The same builder did another house a few doors up with large Dutch-style gable ends, that house sadly having now been UPVC'd to extreme.
