Any idea how deep the Ashlar Lining will be Joce? You would need them deep enough not to fill or become obliterated with lime wash. Have you thought about vee joints at all?

A few mm deep I think! Take your point about obliterated lines in a few years, have to wash old limewash off. What's a vee joint!!

Exactly that Joce. Imagine a V point scratched in the wall about 6 mm or so deep in the mortar which will throw a nice shadow line emphasising the ashlar effect. The lines are achieved by striking a chalk line where the joints are to be scored and then a straight edge is placed on this line and the chosen scoring toll drawn along it. A vee joint is usually achieved by fixing a pointed scribe to the front edge of a float and this is drawn along a straight edge which is positioned below the chalk line corresponding to the distance between the V and the lower edge of the float. Does that compute?

Exciting to see the lining out taking place. In the end Gareth won the argument, of course, and we went for regular blocks. I think they could have been a shade longer but I'm not about to make him undo the work.

They'll look different again limewashed.

And decisions have been made for the motto, a serious one I think as the same joke can wear a bit thin, I'd imagine, once inscribed on your house forever. Many many thanks to Gareth Hughes for the beautiful architect's drawing.
