In my loft there is evidence that some of the brick is powdering away, quite dramatically in some places. There was half a brick in the downstairs fireplace the other day which I figure probably came from one of the two or three gaps in the walls that conenct the loft to the adjoing property. Its only three or four half bricks across the whole building that are missing but also a fair few powdering.
I live three streets away from the sea and the premises was re-roofed totally about 6 years ago, but there is indications that it had been leaking - there is some water staining on the bricks. Or what appears to be.
Is there anything I can do to protect the bricks from further decay? Cosmetics are really an issue because the problem all appears to be in the loft. I am guessing that it may be something to do with salt as we are only three streets from the sea. The house was built in about 1890.
Needs to be soemthing chepa as we've just had it totally rewired after we found some of the most adventurous wiring I've ever seen - ie the cooker was wired directly into the mains, bypassing the meter and the flex had been taped to a radiator to keep it off the floor, thus melting the palstic covering!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any advice appreciated, we are new to this so be gentle!!!!!
