Protecting an old stairs from lime mortar

Sorry if this has been answered before, but does anyone a good solution for covering an old stairs when construction materials (e.g. lime mortar) are being carried up and down? I'm worried about damaging the surface with things like roll and stroll.

What about a floor protection sheet like the Protec one Wickes sell? Corrugated plastic, could be cut to the size of the treads then masking tape in place.

You should use nothing that may pose a trip hazard, on stairs in particular. Consult your contractor but typically sheets of 5mm plywood fastened to the treads to cover their surface is used but this cannot project over the stair nosings, Sorry to sound like a lawyer, but your contractors should be consulted as you may, in the worst event, find yourself sued for a Personal Injury claim.

Staircases are tricky to protect, unfortunately the only option it seems to me is to bespoke cut and gaffe tape the usual protective materials as mentioned above.

If contractors are involved it should be their responsibility to protect any areas they are accessing.

Where contractors are not involved and I've been doing works myself I've tended to use hardboard rather than thin plywood as it's a bit more flexible and easier to cut to shape, but both would be protective once in place.

We left the rather fetching green patterned carpet on ours as long as necessary. But now that’s come off, I must say I’m not too precious - ours have undoubtedly seen a ton of abuse over the centuries and they’re doing fine with what we’re throwing at them. That said, they are are yet to be scraper and cleaned up…

Unless you mechanically attach some board, I don’t see a safe option. The poly flex will, move, split , trip you up and let crap get under. But then you’d need to add multiple screw holes to each tread which shouldn’t be an option.
