dJH, no apology required. I need all the help i can get with this.I had a meeting with the CO at the house today and I'm relieved to know he isn't opposed to downspouts on the building. It's just what to do and how. He did suggest perhaps running the downspouts internally but we are not keen as this would mean a lot of disruption to the internal finishes and lots of noise in heavy rainfall. So we are going with downspouts. The spouts on the back of the building are not so much of an issue. It's the front ones that are very tricky. Any ideas from anyone would be great

What a lovely house. Right up my street as they say!!

I see you have a string course and a plinth to avoid with any downpipes you may fit which is no problem really but I've no doubt that your CO won't let you cut out the string course to allow a straight forward drop although it's quite a normal alteration. Having a double offset halfway up the building that could get blocked in the future is no laughing matter. You could mention that to him, plus they look awful at that height in my mind any way.

Two ideas come to mind. Adapt the existng spout by welding a pipe in the bottom of it which would connect directly to the downpipe or have a head made so that the pipe would discharge into it and then on down the down pipes. This would give you the opportunity to display your coat of arms , the date, your initials or any combination you wish. Should you choose to use lead pipes I suggest you have the portion from the top of the plinth to the ground in cast iron to avoid accidental damage if itthat part was lead.

On the outer side, or downstream from the pipe welded in the spout you would need to have a weir about 2" high or so welded across to stop water from a deluge missing the pipe and coming out of the spout. Should a blockage happen up there, like a birds nest maybe, water will overflow the weir and give warning that something is wrong by discharging from the spout.

When you "login" ( filling in user name and password ) there is a box underneath that says something like "automatically log me in each visit" you need to tick that. Occasionally something will have a hissy fit and you will find you need to login again, but it's infrequent.

I'm a big fan of tablets ( the iPad or whatever sort, not the aspirin sort ) better than trying to surf on a teensy phone screen and much more portable than any of the laptops of even lightweight computers.

Your work is really beautiful, do you make other sorts of things? I'm not in the market for any rainwater hoppers!

I did make other things before I retired including garden ornaments and other architectural features like finials etc and whatever I was asked to make really.

Here's something different I made many years ago. It was for a lady client who had lost her husband and wanted to be buried together with him when she died. As I understand it she had her husband embalmed and his coffin put in this sarcophagus which was sealed and placed in her garden. I never heard what happened since!



I had to login again to edit this post a minute or so after I'd posted it. I'm sure I'm still doing something wrong and still can't find these darned cookies anywhere. :?

I'm not a mod in here, but I am in a few other places. Let's see if we can fix your login/logout/cookie problem...

Do you get any warnings popping up on your screen (at the bottom of the browser window, for example)?

Do you have problems with your internet connection dropping out often?

Which system/browser are you using? Windows? Internet Exploder, Firefox, or Chrome?
Or Apple and Safari?

If it's Windows and Firefox (one of the better combinations) do you have any plug-ins/add-ons installed?
To check, click Tools - Add Ons at the top, then look in Extensions and Plug-ins in the tabs at the left of that page.
There are some that need to be "told" to allow periodproperty.co.uk

If it's Internet Explorer, try downloading Chrome (you can get it here).
It's free, very capable and has none of the nasty habits of IE once it's running.
As you go through the installation process, watch out for it inviting you to install other stuff, such as browser toolbars or antivirus etc. Google make their money on those extras which may confuse things summat rotten. Only tick boxes for Chrome the browser (untick others that may be pre-ticked) and all will be well.

See what you find, and we'll take it from there.

Or just use a favourite motif. LadyA would likely have an elephant and I loved the bee in one of the downpipe photos.

In some of the old documents associated with our house there is mention of an annual rent of "a rose and a sparhawk". I assume it was some sort of equivalent to what we'd call a 'peppercorn rent' these days. It's not entirely clear if it was for just the house or the entire manor of the same name, but it could be a basis for some sort of decorative motif for the house at some stage.

It's made from bronze and then gold leafed. Something for the pigeons in London to perch on.

It could well be, but as far as I recall the 'B' in the pennant stands for Barclays. As it happens the pennant was missing and I had to replicate it from old photographs. The hardest part was getting the size of the ball on the finger the right size so that the whole thing balanced so that it turned in the wind. I never asked if it did. :wink:



This picture (not very good quality I'm afraid) shows where the consol brackets I posted before, fitted against the cheeks of the dormer windows. I made the reeded hips along with the ribbons..

It's an office block called Kinnaird House and was Barclays regional office. It's unusual in that it stands alone with streets on all sides. It was a nightmare arranging deliveries there what with time restrictions and police permits to get into that part of London and, after doing all that, fitting in with time slots for the crane.
