Random gypsum plastering question

I’ve had some gypsum plastering done on a new extension and while most of the interior angles are lovely are crisp, on two areas they have blended the angle into a curve.

Other than hacking off and re-doing, any other thoughts or how I can “undo” the blended angle to restore the nice crisp lines I’ve lost?

This suggestion is based on zero knowledge, probably silly and even if practical more work than your original idea. But can you cut a groove on the edge, inset a piece of stainless and plaster up to that?

Did you ask the plasterers why they formed the corner like this? If you want to hack if off and DIY it Knauf fill and finish is much easier to use if you don't want to use multi finish. Knauf is very easy to sand into shape.

I would add Gyproc Easifill to that, its excellent stuff. I would get a nice sharp steel scrape for spatula and carefully remove the unwanted material from both planes.

Yes, I wondered that too.
Personally, I prefer rounded corners so I'd be leaving them as they are rather than try to 'fiddle' a sharp corner after the event, especially as a sharp corner without suitable beading will not be as robust as a rounded one and could be easily 'chipped' (though Milady's suggestion might reduce this risk).

Hmm, I missed that. Strange if that's the case though, as I'd think it would be far easier to make nice sharp corners internally than to curve them.

The corners are internal at the top of a vaulted ceiling - they did the plastering while I was away. If you zoom in on the top of the triangular windows you can see the curve of the plaster against the straight corners and it’s triggering my OCD.


Their reason for blending was “we always do it like this as it is less likely to crack due to roof timber movement and if you wanted crisp edges you should have detailed them in a drawing”

I have a large tub of the Knauf stuff already to rectify some other issues, but given the other issues with the build don’t really have the enthusiasm to run up a platform and rectify it for now. Think I will whack the mist coat on and live with it for a couple of weeks while I sort everything else out and see if that helps lessen the annoyance

It's more to do with how much extra work it is getting a straight line, than dubbing out the angle and then you can run the trowel over the angle in one go. Having it rounded doesn't show the deviations in the line as much.
Otherwise you need a chalk line or stop bead to work to.
If a ceiling is going to crack, really thick plaster won't stop it, unless it's reinforced.

If it's high up on a ceiling I would be doing my best to leave it alone. Plastering ceilings is the worst job. There's a good risk of damaging the plasterboard when removing plaster and ending up with a big job.

I quite like the curves. My attic room has them.

They mentioned they had reinforced it and used a more flexible plaster product in that area (can’t remember the name but it began with M)

To be honest your thoughts align with mine, that they had rounded to make their lives easier, if it wasn’t for the contrast with the angular window highlighting it I probably wouldn’t have cared. Will see if I can persuade myself that it’s not worth tackling

Interestingly the tub of Knauf fill and finish I purchased this time has been rubbish. Far too wet, takes days to dry, loads of trapped air in leading to bubbles etc despite a thorough mixing and shrinks like you wouldn’t believe.

Not sure if I got a bad one or if the recipe has changed but gone back to easifill 60.

The pre mixed stuff always takes ages to dry and as you say if it’s too wet you’re stuck with it. I avoid and just go with easifill for all coats when I’m jointing gyproc.

Perhaps you got a bad mix. I've used it a lot on jobs and never had those issues, although it does need 24 hours between coats so it's no use on a job you need to finish in a day. Tape and fill isn't my trade, but a lot of the pros use it on the bigger jobs.

Yeah it has been great before hence was surprised it was so bad this time, worst area took 3-4 days to dry even with a fan blowing over it
