My pamment tiles are sealed with linseed oil but have been stained by stove glass cleaner. How do I remove the linseed oil before restaining?
Partially.Linseed soaks into the pores in porous tiles.
It can (mostly and enough for recoating) with enough washing after stripping.I'm not sure it can be removed.
Unlike shellac and wax which dry by evaporation and are reversible, LO and BLO are conversion finishes that cure with oxygen to form a polymer, so turps won't dissolve cured oil completely.Maybe pure turpentine would get some off.
True, often oil was thinned and applied first then wax applied on top. Using turps is a great first idea as it will dissolve any wax and the discolouration might simply be the stove cleaner (often contain meths or acetone which dissolve wax) acting on the wax. Cleaning off the old wax and rewaxing might do the trick. And yes, gum turpentine is the nicest but most things remove wax, ie, wax remover, furniture reviver, acetone, meths, xylene, NC paint / lacquer thinners, white spirits, brake cleaner, WD40, washing soda, sugar soap, NaOH etc...Normally there is a wax finish on top. There are floor wax removal products out there. Might be worth a try to see if that helps remove the stain
